Subscriber Arjun Reddy hunted 10 days on horseback in eastern Kazakhstan for maral stag this past September, on a hunt booked through the Paris-based agency Seladang (011-33-1-42-97-13-12; www.seladang.com). He reports taking a trophy that scored 355. (See photo in our online Trophy Gallery.) "One does not see a lot of animals, but we were told this upfront. You do have a chance at shooting very big bulls though and can expect to see two or three during your 10-day hunt." Reddy failed to take a roe deer, noting, "Not the best time of the year. We were told this as well, but tried a couple of outings."
Reddy gives the outfitting and guiding top ratings while noting that the food and camp accommodations were good. Reddy recommends the hunt. "You are hunting in a very remote region on horseback, with a chance to shoot a monster Asian elk in a place that feels like 100 years ago." He cautions that the hunter must be fairly fit to walk in the mountains and ride horses and recommends good mountain boots and a good sleeping bag. He gives the cost of the hunt as ¬11,000, which includes a trophy of any size.
