We published a series of reports from 20022005 on the reopening of hunting in Congo-Kinshasa (former Zaire) by operator George Angelides. Congo-Kinshasa is also called the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and lies across the Congo River from Congo-Brazaville, Republic of the Congo. Efforts to start safari hunting in Kinshasa fizzled out in 2005 due to a string of problems. You can read those past articles (a total of 13) in our online database. What occasions this re-mentioning of DRC is a recent email I received from Angelides in which he tells me he is still kicking around DRC and hoping to get hunters and anglers on some trips. He writes: "I am still registered in the DRC and did open the hunting. Since I recce'd the center and south, mainly along the Angola border, and found no viable hunting except for a very few species, I finally ended up North on the CAR and Sudan borders with excellent results! First, hardly any human habitation. Secondly, a lot of game - bongo, elephant, roan, waterbuck, bushbuck, sitatunga, pygmy and western buffalo, giant forest hog, bushpig, yellow-back and other duikers, leopard, lion and giant eland. Also, the fishing on the Uele and Uere rivers is excellent. Lots of tigerfish, and no fishing by any locals, except the old-fashioned reed grass traps - NO nets. Just unbelievable! "My plan, with any interested investors, is to start the fishing expeditions and whilst there to do the responsible recce' for the game that is under CITES protection, especially elephant and giant eland. I need to find out what one can export out of the DRC to the States and Europe and how far the powers in Kinshasa have got on CITES. "I don't believe there is any problem with other species. Bongo and sitatunga are plenty!! There are plenty elephant, and big ones. It's a fantastic area, where pastors with the Africa Inland Mission told me American missionaries shot some BIG elephant from the 60s to 70s! "I have an interest to go back to the Bili Uerre blocks. The area will need further exploration toward the Sudan border........(
