In Mexico, Jim Schaafsma of Arrow Five Outfitters called with an update on my article in the March 1998 issue on Mexican desert mule deer. It seems that his Mexico partner, Jorge Camou has leased three more ranches, which means he is able to book up to a dozen more hunters. Last year, Camou hosted eight hunters who killed six mule deer. Schaafsma says a few bucks on Camou's ranches are of the quality that made Mexico's reputation. In fact, a 26-point, nontypical buck was tagged several years ago on one of his new ranches. But Schaafsma also noted that bucks of this quality aren't behind every cactus, so Camou has devised an attractive pricing package. His six-day hunt has a base cost of $3,000 with a $2,500 kill fee, which is one of the fairest hunt packages I know of for Mexican desert mule deer.
