SDA Outfitters specializes in Columbia whitetails. They also hunt Columbia blacktails, black bear and Roosevelt elk. SDA co-owner Kevin Anderson was Hamberlin's guide. Hamberlin says Anderson was waiting for him at the airport in Eugene, and had all the tags sorted out prior to his arrival. Hamberlin gave Anderson excellent marks for his attention to detail and willingness to adapt the hunt to Hamberlin's preferences. He says that while hunters can use an ATV on this hunt, he chose to hunt primarily on foot, using the ATV only to go from one ridge to the next.
Hamberlin recommends good spotting optics for the hunt. His shot was less than 100 yards, but he says, shot opportunities could be up to 300 yards.
Accommodations were in a comfortable lodge house with "fantastic" food. "No white glove porters like I've experienced in Africa," says Hamberlin, "but not a tent in Alaska, either."
