In an e-mail Stephen Meyer says, "This area has produced bulls over 50 pounds regularly the last 10 years. Elephants frequent this area in February, March and April, drawn by crops grown by the locals. September and October are also prime months.
"This particular hunt was the first of the season. We started on the 28th of February with Herman Ertl from Klagenfurt, Austria. We left the airport about 4:30 pm and drove straight to the hunting area to check on an elephant that had been crop raiding regularly. We arrived at dusk and were greeted by a group of angry locals. The elephant had been feeding in the field for some time despite their efforts to chase it away. A heart shot at 25 yards put the monster down. There was definitely no ground shrinkage here. The final measurement was 90 x 87 pounds.
"Five days later, Herman's hunting companion, Walter Moser, shot an elephant weighing 79 X 76 pounds in the same area with professional hunter Johan Bezuidenhout. This area, along with two others around the Gonarezhou, has been under the control of Lowveld Hunters for the past 15 years. The booking agent was Buffalo Trails of Klagenfurt, Austria (011-43-664-133-48-70; neuper.martin@gmx.at)."
