The hunt took place in the mountains around Truckee in northern California. Gregory hunts behind dogs, using a "strike" dog (the dog with the most sensitive nose) standing on top of a dog box on the hunting truck. The truck slowly moves along a road until the dog detects a scent and howls. At that point, Gregory stops to check the tracks and releases the pack of hounds. Edwards says Gregory had several dog handlers and teams of dogs. He gives all the handlers and guides high marks for their efforts and calls them "the nicest folks to hunt with." He also notes that Gregory is a professional chef and prepared exceptional meals.
Edwards says he was interested in this hunt specifically for a color-phase bear. "I could have killed 80 to 90 black bears over the years, but I wanted a color-phase bear," he says. "It was difficult to find a hunt that I could physically handle. This hunt was everything Gregory said it would be. I give it a thumbs up all the way."
