Atwood says he already had an elk trophy that scored 398 B & C, but he wanted one that would break the 400 mark. So, he purchased the Arizona Governor's Tag at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's convention and booked Moss to help him find his dream bull. Moss put spotters out in various areas of the state and had 18 400-point-plus bulls spotted by the time Atwood's hunt started. They began hunting in Unit 23, where they spent five days looking for a big elk they knew was there. When they could not find him, a call from another spotter sent them on a five-hour drive to Unit 9, where they spent another five days looking for a big 7x8 seen there.
They eventually spotted a 7x7 bull they watched and video taped. Two mornings later, they walked into the area in the rain at 3 am to ambush the bull at daylight. Atwood says they ended up running through the trees to catch up to the elk, and he had to take a running shot. The bull scored 404 B&C. Atwood gives Mossback Outfitters an all-excellent rating and says they operate honestly and flawlessly.
