Unfortunately, Pian Upe is one of the areas where hunting was suspended. Hennessey arrived just as the letter about the suspension arrived in mailboxes, and he was fortunate he got to hunt at all. Pian Upe and Amudat Community Wildlife Area are two concessions within the Karamoja held by Karimojong Overland Safaris. Karamojo Safari was operating a limited number of hunts in that area in conjunction with Karimojong. Philip Chollet of Karamojo Safari has a 20-year agreement for the wildlife management rights in the largest part of the Karamojo, which includes Matheniko -Bokora Wildlife Reserve and Iriri and Karenga Community Wildlife Areas. He continues arranging hunts in those areas, which were not affected by the suspension. These are old-style bush-whacking safaris, sans luxury. If you are an experienced Old Africa Hand who doesn't mind roughing it and loves the idea of re-exploring a historic hunting area, these hunts may be for you. Contact Chollet (info@karamojo safari.com) for more details.
