As for the incident with Archer, I first learned of his attack from subscriber Cameron Hopkins who contacted me after he had spoken to people present at the time of the incident. The version he was told was that Archer had left his rifle behind during a stalk on some puku. The client's shots at the puku supposedly started a stampede by some elephants in nearby papyrus. I sent E-mail Extra subscribers a bulletin about the incident, with a link to Hopkins' story as it appears in his blog on the NRA's web site for its American Hunter magazine (www. americanhunter.org/ArticlePage. aspx?id=2048&cid=25).
Shortly after that, I received a first-hand version from Archer through Michel Mantheakis of Miombo Safaris. Archer says he did not leave his rifle behind, but rather his gun bearer cried "tembo" when he saw the advancing cow elephant and ran off with Archer's gun! Archer and his client eventually caught up with the gun bearer, and Archer got off a shot at the charging elephant at only 10 meters.
