It's fair to say that Mauney is not an easy hunter to please, as he reminded us himself: "As a long-time Hunting Report subscriber with 30 years of hunting experience in 16 states and four foreign countries, I have written many hunt reports regarding outfitted hunts I have been on, most of them negative." The way Mauney tells it, however, this hunt is a winner. "While customer service in most of America is a lost art form, I am pleased to report it is alive and well at Shepp Ranch," he says. He goes on to describe how the staff, from the guides to the cook, managers, etc., provided everything one could want on a hunt of this type. He says they were polite, friendly and professional in every aspect and delivered on time performance each day. He says the food was fresh, the packed lunches good, and the boat transportation required to reach the ranch 40 miles up the Salmon River was well handled. The cabin accommodations were warm, clean and comfortable. In addition to bears, Mauney reports seeing abundant numbers of elk and deer. Plus, he says the wild and scenic Salmon River just added to the whole trip. Not surprisingly, he rates every aspect of the trip, including personal guide Dave Von Essen, as excellent.
Mauney says this is a real spot-and-stalk bear hunt in pristine wilderness with near 100 percent success on black and color phase bears in the four- to six-foot range. "While not large in size, they are abundant and beautiful in color," he notes.
