Boet Nel of Boet Nel Hunting Safaris secured the Mahango Game Park concession, which is part of Bwabwata National Park. When I spoke with him he had already taken two 50-pound elephants and had permits for four jumbo left, along with buffalo, kudu, warthog, duiker and impala. Mahango encompasses 245 square kilometers (60,540 acres). It borders the Okavango River in the east, Botswana to the south and Popa Game Park in the north with communal land on the west. Mahango offers protection to a significant number of species that should be of reasonable quality and number.
Nel was finishing up construction of a new camp on the banks of the Okavango to house his hunters in the concession. It consists of three double tents with ensuite bathrooms on concrete slabs. In addition to elephant, Nel says his first clients took buffalo and crocodile, all within four days of hunting. In two days, he says they looked over 45 elephant. "The Mahango Game Park is known as an area where almost all the elephant encountered are bulls," Nel says. The average goes 50 pounds, but he claims 70-plus-pounders have been seen.
