"Every year we go to the SCI Convention in Reno and other hunt shows and without fail have to defend ground hunting of tahr and chamois and explain that it can easily be done. Prospective clients are told by outfitter after outfitter that the only way to hunt these animals is by helicopter. This is straight-out nonsense. Some of us have the knowledge, skill base and properties to guide our hunters successfully using traditional ground stalking methods and do so year after year." (Editor Note: For the record, a number of hunters have told us they choose to hunt tahr and chamois with the aid of a helicopter because they either do not have the required physical ability to climb or they do not want to spend up to five days chasing one species during a trip to New Zealand. That said, many others have shown great interest in foot hunts for these species, and it is for them that we have passed on the above information. Incidentally, we have one report in our database on South Pacific Hunters from subscriber Scott McConnell. (See Hunt Report ID 6762.) McConnell hunted tahr with Musgrave this past June/July and reports taking a gold medal and a silver medal tahr on foot. He gives Musgrave a good to excellent rating and says, "It was a great experience. Get in shape to hunt on foot.")
