"My friends Chip Anderson and his wife Claire Buchy operate their own adventure-travel agency and were the ones who arranged the group hunting trip to Senegal I told you about some months ago in these pages. Just recently, they invited me to join the same group that went to Senegal for a wild boar hunt in Croatia this coming September. The hunt would be arranged by Artemis Hunting, Ltd., at a very attractive price -- more on that in a moment.
"You may recall, this an outfitting agency based in London, England, that specializes in organizing hunting trips to Croatia. Founder and director Tomo Svetic is a native Croatian hunter and former gamekeeper and a 15-year member of the Croatian Hunting Federation. Svetic has more than 10 years experience as a professional hunter and agent. After moving to London, he started Artemis in 2006 to arrange hunting trips for several Croatian estates where he is directly involved in the game management. These estates are mostly unfenced, although hunting fenced ground can be arranged. Svetic makes a point of telling would-be clients to beware of any Croatian outfitters offering guaranteed trophies -- which he prefers not to do -- as such guarantees can only come from a fenced estate.
"Boar are apparently very numerous in Croatia and can be exceptionally big, some over 600 pounds. In the early fall, when I will be hunting, wild boar are taken from high seats on the Croatian estates. Boar hunting is, in fact, year round, with high seats used from February into mid-October, while driven hunts are the rule during winter. Early last month, Svetic had seven "guns" take 21 boar in four days of drives.........(continued)
