Still in Tanzania, there have been two more close encounters with dangerous game in the field in the past month, plus a third I learned about that occurred this past November. Along with the encounter I told you about last month between Doug Scandrol and a leopard in Zambia, that makes four attacks. One of them included a client.
The incident from this past November occurred during a safari handled for subscriber Bob Gomes by Robin Hurt Safaris. Gomes says they were following up a buffalo his hunting partner had wounded when it charged and struck PH Austin Weinand. By the time they drove the animal off, it had trampled Weinand, shredding his clothing and breaking several ribs. Gomes says they had to make tourniquets of Weinand's clothing to stop the bleeding on his legs, which he says were cut up by the animal's hooves. Thankfully, they had a satellite phone with them, and Weinand was quickly evacuated to a Nairobi hospital for medical attention. On a telephone call to Weinand he shrugged the incident off saying, I'm fine. These things happen.
