I spoke at length with Montes about his operation. Because I have witnessed a growing trend among long-time outfitters to rely on their past reputations and say almost anything to sell a hunt, I took the time to test Montes. For example, I asked about a sheep unit that I know well, and he proceeded to give me reasonable expectations for rams in that hunt area. He gave me facts I knew to be true rather than just telling me what he thought I wanted to hear. That was refreshing.
Another thing that impressed me is that Montes is willing to customize hunts and packages to match his clients' needs. He and his partner understand that a trophy to one individual does not necessarily meet the standards of another; some hunters are fit and others aren't; some are experienced and others aren't; nor are we all financially capable of paying the big bucks that some out-of-state hunts cost. Another way to customize hunts is to help clients select units on their applications that are appropriate to their needs. Addressing all of these issues up front makes a huge difference in the success of the hunt and is more apt to make the entire experience a more positive one for the hunter.
