The outfit I'm talking about is Dave Evans' Victoria Outfitters. While researching this operator, everything I heard about him was good - ample sightings of game, good food, friendly and knowledgeable guides and more-than-comfortable lodging.
This operation is located in remote central Newfoundland. The lodge is situated on the Victoria River, in Hunting Area 17. If you look on a map, it is located off Route 370, which leaves the Trans Canada Highway at the town of Badger, a mere wide spot in the road. The hardest part of the trip is getting from the town of Millertown Junction (down the road a ways from Badger) to the lodge. This last leg is over a bumpy, sometimes alder-infested dirt road. The drive takes about 2½ hours. The lodge and its guest cabins sit on the far side of the river and to reach it clients and equipment are transported across the river by boat, or on an open barge, completing the sense of isolation. There is no doubt you are smack in the middle of pure wilderness and surrounded by prime moose and bear habitat.
Newfoundland is not well known for producing massive moose racks, but with a population of 120,000 of these animals and the highest moose density on the North American continent, hunters here typically experience unparalleled success rates averaging 85 percent. On three different hunts to Newfoundland, I have killed three moose, one of the largest a 19-pointer with a narrow 45-inch spread.
