The latest incident is the killing of a poacher by Geoffroy de Gentile, a PH for the Mayo Oldiri safari company. The killing led to a revenge raid by the poacher's family on the Mayo Oldiri Lognia Safari Camp. Here is how Antonio & Raquel Reguera of Mayo Oldiri explain what happened:
We would like to clarify what happened in one of our forest hunting camps recently. You have probably heard already some rumours about this. What happened this past August in the southeast of Cameroon, in Lognia camp, was a consequence of the action of one of our forest PHs, Geoffroy de Gentile. He was driving out of the hunting area and bumped into a group of poachers. While trying to arrest them in order to hand them over to the police, he got into trouble and killed one of the poachers. In revenge, the poacher's family went to the camp Geoffroy manages and tried to get hold of him. When they could not find him, they destroyed his bungalow and personal belongings. Regarding the cars, we can confirm that three of them were damaged, fortunately not severely. Fortunately, all trophies of this camp are in perfect condition, too, and safe at our storage place.
We are currently waiting for a court judgement so we can decide whether Geoffroy can continue hunting in Cameroon. In the meantime, he has followed the strong advice of the French Embassy and left Cameroon. He is currently safe back in France.
