Many of you know Joof Lambrecht he was an Angola and Caprivi Strip elephant hunter in his younger years and later was a PH for Jack O'Connor and other notables before turning author. He and his wife/partner, Marina, have been fixtures at the SCI shows for many years, and now they frequent the Dallas Safari Club Show, too often with their family in tow: Jofie, Hanns-Louis and Michelle.
Two years ago, when Namibia was wrestling with whether or not to permit hunting leopards with dogs, I spoke with Joof about his expectations for hunting with dogs in Namibia. The way we left our conversation was, I would visit his Rooikraal Ranch when it became legal to hunt a leopard with dogs. It turned out that I was able to make final arrangements for my hunt with Joof's son, Jofie, at the 2006 SCI Show in Reno. I arrived for my hunt late in May that same year.
Jofie is an energetic young PH who has followed in his father's footsteps and become a valuable part of the Hunters Namibia Safaris family. It is Jofie who is leading the company's leopard hunts with dogs. In order to provide this service to clients, Jofie has teamed up with two different dog men who have high-quality hounds.
Although the concept of hunting with dogs may be new to some readers, it is not a new concept altogether. Here in the US, we use dogs for mountain lions, and photographs of old African safaris often depict a pack of dogs with a leopard as the trophy. I imagine that there are people who feel baiting is improper however, I believe that all of these methods, including the use of dogs, are African tradition.
