As for jumbo in Botswana, I'm indebted to Debbie Peake of Machaba Developments in Maun for the following mini-roundup: As at today's date (19 September) Hol- brow Hunting Safaris (Peter Hol- brow) has claimed numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the elephant trophy chart for the 2006 hunting season. His wildlife management area in the northwestern Okavango Delta has produced spectacular results this year. The No. 1 trophy was a 164-pounder (total weight both tusks) shot by a well-known Austrian client who celebrated his 75th birthday on the safari. The No. 2 jumbo weighed 159 pounds, and it was shot the last week of the hunting season by a repeat client who took the No. 1 elephant in 2005 in the same area! No other hunting area in Botswana has consistently produced such excellent harvest results.
Included in the terrific results this year is Johan Calitz, whose clients this year took No. 5 (a 141-pounder), No. 6 (a 137-pounder) and No. 7 (a 136-pounder); and Bottle Pan Safaris in the Chobe District, which accounted for a jumbo that shares the No. 5 spot. I should also mention that Johan Calitz Safaris has just taken another big elephant in an Okavango Delta area as I write this. It has yet to be officially weighed, but I am told it may take the No. 3 spot. All in all, it has been a very good season in Botswana.
