The permit was good for two weeks of hunting. Outfitter Ryan Leef of Ruby Range Outfitting got the job of outfitting the hunt for the Kluane First Nation. He says guide Kelly Wiebe and Rasmusson backpacked for six days and saw over 70 rams, including eight over 40 inches. They settled on a 45 X 45-inch monster that should green-score on a tight tape somewhere over 176 B & C. The B & C minimum is 170. Early reports and pictures of the ram circulating by e-mail pegged it a couple inches more, but the official score will likely be close to the score given above. We are trying now to get a photo of this great trophy for the Trophy Gallery section of our web site.
Leef also has been busy with his regular hunts and operating his territory, which is right across the lake from the area owned by the First Nations. Leef prides his camp on taking good sheep, and last year he scored 15 first-time Dall sheep hunters on first rams for a 100 percent success rate. Bookings are available for 2008, or perhaps if you have deep pockets you can buy the second special Kluane permit at FNAWS this winter. Obviously it is a good value.
