Although the 2006/2007 Kyrgyz- stan season is lost to American Marco Polo hunters due to the paperwork snafu, there is hope that these annual reports will become unnecessary in the near future, thanks to John J. Jackson, III, of Conservation Force and Dennis Campbell of OVIS. They tell us they are working on a project that will meet USF&WS requirements without mandating an annual report. Jackson says it will take a good part of the year to get this done. He was hopeful that it would be completed in time for the 2007/8 season.
Here at The Hunting Report, we are eager to hear how agents and outfitters are dealing with affected clients. Brief updates only at this point, please. There will be time later for the possible filing of more detailed reports.
In our E-Mail Extra bulletin on this development last month we also asked for feedback from clients who bought Trip Cancellation Insurance for Marco Polo hunts in Kyrgyzstan through the SCI Travel Protection Plan (www.huntandtravel.com). We did not realize at that point that the SCI Travel Protection plan is sold with an up-front understanding that governmental action blocking the export of trophies is not grounds for a claim. Only governmental action that makes a hunt itself unavailable is grounds for a claim. We apologize for the misunderstanding.
