I understand that TAHOA (Tanzania Hunting Operators Association) is largely responsible for getting the season back open so swiftly. Word I have is they quickly convinced the powers that be that hunters were already in the field, or on their way to Tanzania, and the country was about to experience a legal and public relations nightmare. Hats off to TAHOA for their swift action!
Longer term, though, I am worried. The letter reinstating lion hunting, it should be noted, refers not to a "hold" on lion and ostrich hunting but to a "cancellation" of those seasons. Was this simply a word-usage slip-up because everyone was working quickly, or did Tanzania originally plan to "cancel" those seasons this year? If so, why would they do that, and who would have been pushing them to do that?
As this is written, I am still digging to see what really happened, and I will pass on what I learn next month. In the meantime, hunters headed into the field after lions this season are urged to cooperate with the........(continued)
