Make no mistake - Niassa Reserve is a gem of a hunting area. And some of the decisions that were made at last month's meeting make the place even more desirable. For starters, the rules on elephant hunting have been changed to allow hunters to take the biggest jumbo they see. In fact, the minimum shootable size is now 60 pounds. Also, reserve officials voted to adopt the six-year rule as it applies to shootable lions. That may make it harder for current clients to connect on a lion, but it places the reserve squarely on the map as a place to go in the future for a good lion. Niassa also has good leopard, buffalo and a host of other desirable game. The only drawback is the US Govern- ment's refusal to allow Mozambique ivory into the US. The prospects for change any time soon are not all that good either. We'll keep you posted on that.
