To operate the new bear hunting program, Long has arranged for Alaskan guide Jim Hamilton of True North Adventures to organize and guide the hunts. These will be baited hunts from ground blinds and stands. No more than four hunters will be in camp at one time, with two hunters per guide. Long is confident that hunters should have no problem taking up to three bears on this four-day hunt. The cost is $2,500, with extra bears at $500 each. Hunts will run from the last week of May through mid-June. Hunters fly into Anchorage and take a $110 charter across Cook Inlet to Tyonek Lodge.
Long says he is also working with Hamilton on a Sitka blacktail deer hunt on Kodiak and Afognak islands. Hamilton uses a boat to peruse the beaches and takes hunters ashore to spot and stalk the deer. The hunting is from late October through November when the bucks are coming off the high country and are in rut. Hunters should be able to take two bucks over a six-day period. Hunts are 2 x 1 and cost $4,000. There is a trophy fee of $500 for bucks scoring from 100 SCI to 109 8/9. Bucks from 110 SCI and higher incur a charge of $1,000. The SCI........(continued)
