Maine: Maine has a split moose season. Dates for 2006 are September 25 through September 30 for Wildlife Management Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 and 19; October 9 through October 14 for Wildlife Management Districts 1 through 14, 17, 18, 19, 27 and 28.
There are two ways to obtain a moose permit: lottery and auction bid. Auction bid is by far your best chance. There are five permits up for bid, and last year they sold for between $10,880 and $10,150. Generally, the price for the lowest winning bid has climbed each year. To submit a bid, you will need to get a mail bid packet from Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Call 207-287-8000; or order one online at http://www.state.me.us/ifw/hunttrap/moosehunting/index.htm. Click on "Moose Auction." Bids must be received at Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, 284 State Street, Augusta, ME 04333, no later than 5 pm Eastern Time on March 31, 2006. A nonrefundable bid fee of $25 must accompany each bid. The bid will be opened on April 3, and winners will be notified immediately.
As for the lottery, applications must be submitted or postmarked by April 3, 2006. You can get an application online at www.informe.org/ifw/moosepermit .html.
