Over in Botswana, the 2005 season went well, with many good jumbo and some fine lions hitting the ground. There are two less-than-positive matters that deserve attention, however. The first is a debacle surrounding the illegal use of citizen licenses to hunt several jumbo. The hunts are reported to have been sold on the floor of the SCI Convention last year, by an outfitter who was not licensed to hunt in Botswana. The four clients caught up in the scam have had their ivory confiscated. It will not be exported.
The object lesson here, as you shop for a hunt in Botswana at the conventions this winter, is to be sure that your intended operator is licensed to hunt in the country. You can get a list of licensed operators from Debbie Peake at Botswana Wildlife Managers Association.
