Based in Olton, Texas, Swoap has developed good relationships with landowners and farmers in the Lubbock area, gaining access to over 4,000 acres that range from sandhills to agricultural fields and playa lakes. His hunts are for mature bucks that are at least 6½ years old. Clients usually hunt deer that Swoap has pre-scouted and patterned before the season. Hunters often set up on one of the many sandhills in the area they are hunting to glass for bucks. The hunting is mostly spot-and-stalk, and Swoap has had clients take bucks as close as 40 yards, although most shots are between 100 and 200 yards. Sometimes they shoot bucks that are bedded during mid-day and sometimes they catch them moving from their beds to feed in the corn, milo and alfalfa fields early and late in the day.
Two of Swoap's clients, father-and-son team John and Brian Walter, have hunted six years with Swoap and report consistently harvesting mature mule deer bucks scoring 150 B & C or better, including a non-typical buck that scored 202 B & C two years ago. "Swoap goes the extra mile for his hunters, and we are looking forward to the hunts we have booked this fall," Brian Walter told The Hunting Report when we checked out this opportunity. He also described the deer as big-bodied brutes resembling those he has hunted in the Rocky Mountains more than the desert mule deer found down in the Trans Pecos.
