We are indebted to subscriber James J. Sharkey for bringing our attention to a web site that fellow subscribers will love. It's called MountainHunter.net (www.mountainhunter.net), and it is sponsored by the Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia. The site's main attraction is a weekly auction featuring hunts and fishing trips from all over western Canada. Each week a new hunt is posted, allowing visitors to place bids for several weeks. Reserves are set at 50 percent of market value, and the items have been selling at 50 to 70 percent of listed prices. Everything from black bear to stone sheep hunts have been auctioned at incredible savings. Sharkey himself purchased an eight-day mountain goat hunt in British Columbia with Anna Fontana of Elk Valley Bighorn Outfitter for $3,600. That was a 50 percent savings off the listed price of $7,300. Other great buys hunters have grabbed off MountianHunter. net include a grizzly bear hunt with Lobo Peak Guide Outfitters for $5,855; and a 10-day Shiras moose hunt with Beaverfoot Outfitting for $3,550. All of the outfitters offering hunts are members of GOABC, which draws members from Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut as well as British Columbia.
What's behind the auction? A portion of the proceeds go to GOABC's efforts to promote hunting and defend hunting rights in western Canada. To participate in the auctions, you must subscribe to MountianHunter.net. The cost is $5 per month.
