If your hunting plans this fall include a whitetail deer hunt in eastern Alberta, along the border of Saskatchewan, better get in touch with your outfitter. Seems the Edmonton Sun is reporting that the Alberta government is organizing a massive deer cull in that region to keep chronic wasting disease out of the province's deer and elk.
The cull will be carried out by Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials armed with high-powered rifles. Plans call for completely eliminating the mule and whitetail deer of both sexes and all ages from a nearly 300-square-kilometer area east of Chauvin, a town in Alberta about 170 miles southeast of Edmonton.
It's intended to be a complete removal, wherever we can do that, Dave Ealey, a spokesman for the Sustainable Resource Development, told the Edmonton Sun.
We immediately asked western Canada Correspondent Ken Nowicki for his reading on the matter. Clearly, anyone who's booked on an Alberta deer hunt near the town of Chauvin should ask his outfitter if the cull is in his area," Nowicki said. He went on to note that the affected area is officially known as WMU 234.
