Hunter/collectors headed to South Africa will want to know that Safari Club International is looking into the possibility of recognizing a new category of springboks. Called golden springbok, the animal does not have a white belly but rather a copper-colored one. Two Hunting Report subscribers have already submitted reports listing this species as one of the animals they successfully hunted in South Africa. One report is from L. Irvin Barnhart, who hunted with Dial Dunkin at the DD Ranch in the Northern Cape. The second report is from Larry Shores who hunted with Peter Thormählen of Thormählen & Cochran Classic African Safaris, also in the Northern Cape. Biological information has been submitted to the SCI Records Committee for consideration as a new category. Michael Robinson from the SCI Records Department tells us the category, if accepted, would be much like that of the black springbok. If the committee approves the new category, it will not appear in the record book until the 2008 edition, as the deadline for the 2005 edition was last December.
