Jombo Developments.Latest on Chad. MorePublished: October - 2004 The biggest news this month out of Africa all has to do with elephants. First, a very impressive jumbo has been taken in Botswana by a Spanish client hunting with Johan Calitz Hunting Safaris, booking agent Cazatur. The client has asked that his name not be used in the newsletter. The big jumbo weighed 93.7 x 67.2 pounds and measured 65.4 x 78 inches. It was taken in August in the NG32 area in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Our congratulations to the client and to Johan Calitz, who was both safari operator and PH on this hunt. A photo of the big ivory is available on our web site, www.hunting report.com. Click on "Trophy Gallery." The tusks are impressive. Over in Mozambique, word reaching us is elephant hunts have been authorized in at least two of the blocks surrounding the Niassa Reserve, where some of the largest jumbo in all of Africa are thought to live. The Niassa Reserve is in the north of the country, along the Mozambique/Tanzania border. The hunting areas that we know have been allocated permits are Blocks C and A, belonging to Jamie Wilson's Luwire Safaris; and Block E, currently hunted by Jorge Carriso of Niassa Hunters. Luwire has received two permits, which have already been taken by Spanish clients, and Niassa Hunters has received one. Wilson said he planned to start hunting his two jumbo October 22, and he promised to let us know the results. We were not able to confirm Niassa Hunter's plans at press time. The bad news is, US clients cannot bring Mozambique ivory home with them, and there are no indications they will be able to in the near term. Conservation Force's John J. Jackson, III, is continuing to work on this. We will let you know if there is any good news on that front. In the meantime, there is a lot of talk of elephant being open in Zambia, or about to be opened. We ran out of time at press time, trying to nail down just what the situation is. Suffice it........(continued)
