Recently, there have been numerous reports about hunters being injured while on safari in Africa. It highlights just how dangerous our sport can be, even for professionals. But, the danger is not limited to hunting in Africa. Earlier this spring, I learned that a long-time friend and outfitter, Scott Newman, owner of Southeast Alaska Guide Service out of Petersburg, Alaska, was mauled by a brown bear that had been wounded by a client. The hunt was conducted on Admiralty Island, where Newman has guided for a number of outstanding brown bears in the past.
I have reported previously on the hunting that this outfitter offers in southeast Alaska, particularly for bears. Although Newman ended up in the hospital, he is reportedly recuperating and is ready for his fall hunts. So, no matter where you hunt this fall, be careful! . . Life is too short - go hunting!
