I point that out as a roundabout way of introducing you to Powder River Outfitters, which is owned by Ken Greslin and Doug Gardner. They control over 900,000 acres of prime hunting land in the southeast corner of Montana near Broadus. These guys have been partners in the hunting business since 1981, and Greslin started outfitting way back in 1965, so they certainly have passed the test of time.
They produce hunts with a western flavor, which is one reason why many of their clients return year after year. Years ago, I hunted several times with this outfit and I plan to book with them again, God willing, when my grandson is old enough to start hunting. The reasons are simple. First, I definitely include them on my list of honest outfitters. Second, they offer a memorable outdoor experience that would be perfect for my grandson's first-guided hunt. And, third, I personally look forward to hunting with them because they produce a variety of good trophies every year.
One advantage to hunting in this part of the country is that you can hunt antelope and either mule deer or whitetail on the same trip. On one of my hunts, my party killed mule deer to 32 inches, a whitetail that scored in the 160s and all of us took antelope. To round off the hunt, we even killed turkeys and limits of a variety of upland birds.
That said, let's talk about realistic expectations on a typical hunt with Powder River. For certain, this is not the hunt to book if you are bent on a record book animal, although Powder River has produced them. Their average whitetail is going to score in the 140s,........(continued)
