Good news! That US import ban we told you about on CITES-listed species from the Central African Republic has been lifted. Last month, thanks largely to efforts by Boetie Bothma of Aouk-Sangha Safaris, CITES issued a Notification to the Parties withdrawing its recommendation to suspend trade in CITES specimens with CAR, reporting that the CITES Secretariat had received from CAR the appropriate documentation for its annual reports, thus satisfactorily meeting the reporting requirements. Near press time, we checked with the Office of Law Enforcement and the Division of Management Authority at the US Fish and Wildlife Service and confirmed that the United States is indeed allowing the import, export and re-export of CITES species from the Central African Republic.
