As this issue goes to press, officials at PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa) have just issued a press release expressing concern about the new gun regulations that were set to go into effect July 1. In the June 25, 2004 release, PHASA says it has not received instructions on just what will be required of tourist hunters seeking to import firearms. Moreover, it did not appear to them that the police were ready to implement the regulations, even if they were issued in time. They indicated they had asked the police to simply delay implementation of the regulations for now.
Here at The Hunting Report, we will stay on top of this matter and post what we learn on the publicly available part of our web site, www.huntingreport.com. In the meantime, PHASA says arriving hunters should simply assume that the old procedures for importing firearms are still in place. You can read about those procedures on our web site. Simply scroll down to "Important Forms" and click on "Gun Import Procedures In South Africa."
