Last season was a milestone for MUM as the company marked its 25th consecutive year of operating the hunting on Santa Rosa, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. MUM's clients killed 50 bucks that averaged 192 points, and 44 elk bulls scoring 315 points on the SCI scale. These are truly outstanding results, even better than the year before. Indeed, the results have improved significantly over the last few years. During the 2000 hunting season, the elk averaged 309 points, and the deer averaged 174. The Holy Grail for many hunters is a 30-inch mule deer buck. Yet, MUM's average buck last season stretched the tape to 29½ inches and had almost seven tines per side (counting eye guards). Many of their clients' bucks had non-typical points and mass - both highly desirable traits by many hunters. I counted 15 of the 19 bucks in MUM's recent brochure showing non-typical points, including several that had plenty of character. Also, 12 of these bucks scored over 200 points - another result few other outfitters can match! It is very difficult to produce this sort of improvement, especially with as many clients as MUM takes each season.
As you could expect with the results I've presented, there is a long waiting list for both elk and mule deer hunts. Because of the intense interest and MUM's desire to be fair, they recently changed how they handle scheduling of hunts.........(continued)
