Uganda: Turns out the expansion of hunting opportunity in this east African country, which we mentioned briefly last month, is less important than we suggested. According to Dr. Arthur R. Mugisha of Uganda Wildlife Authority, all that has been authorized is an expansion of the pilot hunting program in the far southern end of the country, where a safari operator by the name of R. Matama of Game Trails Uganda, Ltd. has been conducting a limited number of safaris for mostly European clients. "We still have to carry out a thorough evaluation on the impacts of wildlife population before we fully open hunting," Mugisha wrote this past month. In our view, this country merits watching, and it deserves the attention of sustainable-use conservationists. Clearly, there is a chance to turn this country toward a long-term involvement in hunting.
