He has been in business on a full-time basis for six years, and during that time has acquired some very good leases in Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and his home state of Oklahoma. The quality of the trophies collected by his past clients leads Purviance to claim that his outfit takes more big bucks with fewer hunters than most Canadian outfitters. One thing is for sure, he hunts some of the top trophy whitetail buck country in the United States.
For example, he hunts in southern Kansas' units 15 and 16, both well known for trophy bucks. Purviance claims his hunters here have an excellent chance of harvesting 150-plus-class bucks and a very real chance of taking 170-plus-class bucks. He notes that more B & C bucks come out of these two units alone than out of most states. Last year, his top buck in Unit 15 scored 177 points, and the best buck in Unit 16 was nearly the same, scoring 176 points. The Unit 15 buck was also the largest buck his clients have killed in that unit, but in Unit 16 they have taken bucks scoring up to 190 points. While his normal client success rate in Kansas is around 90 percent, last year he was right at 100 percent, with bucks averaging nearly 155 points!
The hunting terrain in this country varies from CRP grassland with brushy draws to thick river bottom hardwoods. Kansas has a statewide draw (call 620-672-5911 for applications), and the odds of drawing are difficult, especially in Unit 16, but Purviance has landowner permits you can purchase. The bad news is that the reputation of these units has driven the cost of a landowner permit way up - $2,500 last year in........(continued)
