Apparently not. Near press time, we spoke with the owner of the game ranch where the killings occurred, Dierk Lempertz, and he said the PH appears to have simply snapped. "He had hunted with me for 10 years, and he was one of the best PHs I have ever known," Lempertz said. "No one knows exactly what happened, but we believe family problems had something to do with it."
The people who were killed were a fellow PH and three trackers. Apparently, a young black girl was shot as well, but not killed. The fifth person to die was the deranged PH himself, who took his own life. Lempertz, whose ranch hunting operation goes by the name of Kibolay (email@example.com), asked me to say that he has already hired two new PH's and that business is going forward as usual.
