"I enjoyed a guided hunt in Butte County, in the northwest corner of South Dakota last fall that was organized by Mike Watkins of Trophies Plus Outfitters. His representative in South Dakota, and the man who runs this portion of the operation, is Fred Lamphere of Newell.
"A man of many skills, Lamphere functions as outfitter, guide and taxidermist and is the newly elected sheriff of Butte County. He puts hunters up at his home, where his lovely wife, Kathy, stuffs you full of her excellent home cooking and then sends you out into the field with homemade chocolate chip cookies and banana bread. You need such sustenance, since there is some very rough country to navigate here, with a lot of up and down walking between buttes and draws. Of course it is these very draws that often hide the big bucks. I ended up getting a mature 4 x 4 mule deer buck that we surprised in his bed one morning. The previous day I muffed a running shot at a buck that came out of a draw like a rocket and carried a rack like an elk's.
"My principal guide on this hunt was Paul Bums of Volga, South Dakota. While only in his mid-20s, Paul is a highly experienced guide who has guided and hunted extensively in Montana and Wyoming as well as South Dakota. He is an excellent judge of trophies, a good companion and as strong as an ox. That said, he uses his strength and stamina carefully. Unlike so many young guides who like to show off, he doesn't run up a mountainside and expect his hunter to keep up with him - something I could do in my 20s and 30s but cannot do now in my mid-60s.
