New Hunt In SudanPublished: March - 2003 As regards that new hunt in Sudan, it is actually scheduled to be developed in South Sudan (or what is being called "New Sudan") by Ethiopian Safari Operator Tom Mattanovich and Swanepoel & Scandrol Safaris. The distinction is an important one, because the US Government has trade sanctions in place that make it illegal for Americans to consider hunting in Sudan. However, there is an ongoing effort to develop friendly ties with the southern (African) part of the country, which has been at war for decades with the Muslim north. The long-term goal is to help the south achieve political autonomy.
Reached at the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, Mattanovich said he has been in touch with US officials, who have led him to believe that a special exception to the current sanctions might be made in the future to allow US hunters to visit South Sudan. In the meantime, he was gearing his promotional efforts to non-US clients. Mattanovich promised us an update later this spring after he has been able to survey the proposed hunting area.
