Since our last issue went to press, two more PHs were seriously injured in Africa. One was gored by a buffalo. The other was accidently shot by a client during an encounter with a buffalo. The two incidents occurred within days of each other. I distributed an Email Extra bulletin about them on August 6.
First, Andre Van Deventer of
Congo Safaris was gored by a dwarf forest buffalo on August 1, 2012. According to Ivena Rossouw of that company, a client had shot a buffalo earlier that day, and it ran off into the forest. "They decided to let it run itself out and get stiff," she says in an email to me. Later, they tracked it into a dense area. The buffalo launched from the underbrush about 20 feet in front of them. Both Van Deventer and the client shot the buffalo, but the animal reached Van Deventer, and as Rossouw put it, "did a good job of messing him up." The client managed to shoot and kill the buffalo right away, but Van Deventer was already severely injured. The client's hunting companion reported hearing the shots very close together. "You cannot believe the buffalo did that much damage in what he remembers to be a maximum of five seconds," Rossouw writes.....
