Most traveling hunters are familiar with Anticosti Island in
Quebec as a whitetail destination. In its heyday back in the 1980s and 1990s the place was in just about every major hunting publication and television show there was. According to
Hunting Report Managing Editor Tim Jones that's because every outdoor writer in the world was getting a free hunt there and writing about "huge" whitetail bucks. The hoopla has since died down, but according to a hunt report we just received from subscriber Ed Yates, Anticosti is still a solid destination for the hunter who just wants to have a fun hunt. Jones followed up with Yates and the folks at Anticosti for the following update:
Yates hunted Anticosti at the peak of the rut this past November and says he took two good bucks, and enjoyed the best camp cooking he's ever experienced in 130 hunts worldwide. He hunted with
Safari Anticosti (514-252-5015), and booked his hunt through
Four Star Adventures (520-305-1780).
Yates took two eight-pointers, one of which scored 90 SCI. These are not exactly the "huge" trophies that were hyped years back, but truth is, there has probably never been a "book" buck taken on the island and probably never will be. For one thing, the deer population is managed for numbers, not trophy size.....
