We recently received three very positive reports on hunting in
England, which, taken together, paint a portrait of game-rich country, quality trophies and genteel hunting and amenities. The first report is from Henning Korvel of Denmark, who traveled with two companions to England to hunt Chinese water deer and Reeve's muntjac in February 2012. Korvel, incidentally, is the correspondent who called our attention to the alleged scam hunts in Hungary we reported on in our January and March issues.
Korvel booked his hunt with an operator named Gerald Collini. The hunting for Chinese water deer was conducted by game keeper Paul Childerley, who Korvel describes as "very competent." He writes, "The night before the hunt, the weather changed, snow fell and the temperature dropped to 15 degrees below zero Celsius. Despite the weather, the hunt succeeded. Divided into two teams, we used four-wheel-drive vehicles to explore the ground, which is a mixture of woods and farm land. When a buck was spotted we continued by foot. The hunting was not easy because the animals had already spotted us when the stalk began. Three of us, however, each shot CIC gold-medal Chinese water deer. They were taken at ranges between 100 and 170 yards. Because the English weapons laws are so strict, we borrowed .22-250 Remington rifles, which were an excellent choice for Chinese water deer.....
