Subscriber Jose Marti of Spain has filed a thoughtful report about a blue sheep hunt in Nepal this past March. He writes, “I booked this hunt through Renaud Desgrees of Paris-based Seladang (011-33-42-971-312; www.seladang.com). The outfitter was Nepal Wildlife Safari, a company owned by the Thapa brothers, Raju and Ahmed. In Nepal, hunting is in Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, a 1,325-square-kilometer area located in West Nepal in the Dhaulagiri Range (which climbs to 8,167 meters or almost 27,000 feet). The Reserve is divided into six hunting blocks, and I hunted in the Seng and Sundaha blocks.
“These areas are full of blue sheep, but only blue sheep. If you want to hunt tahr, you must move to another area. Muntjac also must be sought in other areas due to heavy pressure on them by the local hunters and poachers using dogs that too often become feral and hunt for themselves.
“For this trip I recommend taking a helicopter into the hunting area. It is very expensive, but it will save you six trekking days. Some people have been told to trek these six days to get used to the altitude. Sorry, but that is not true.....
