Most serious western hunters are aware of the hunting opportunities on Indian reservations, such as White Mountain, San Carlos or the Hualapai – all located in Arizona. These operations have developed a well-deserved reputation, and I have reported on them all in the past. But what about the opportunities on other reservations?
One that has slipped under the radar for many hunters is the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. I first became aware of this reservation years ago when I lived in Helena and often traveled to the Sun River country and Glacier National Park to watch and photograph sheep. Later, my son and I even considered outfitting near there because of the numbers and variety of game available. More recently, a friend of mine, a rabid elk hunter, hunted on the Blackfeet Reservation, not once but several times. Obviously, he kept going back for a reason! So, when I saw the tribe’s Fish & Wildlife Department booth at the recent Grand Slam convention, I stopped and talked with them. What I found confirmed what I suspected about their hunting. They are still producing good bull elk, and a number of other trophy hunt opportunities.....
