I have hunted the Groundbirch and Chetwynd areas of eastern British Columbia (near the border with Alberta) with three different outfitters over the last five years. In 2009, I hunted with Danny and Roxane La Greca of Rafter DL Ranch Guiding and Outfitting (250-780-6807; drlagreca@netkaster.ca). There were four hunters in camp, including myself. The three bucks killed scored 168 B&C, 174 B&C; and 155 B&C for an average of 165 B&C. I passed up on a 150-class whitetail and did not kill a buck that year. I rebooked for 2010 based on what I saw of the area and the fact that Danny and his wife are a great team and two of the hardest working people I have ever seen. I returned this past November and took a 170-plus B&C buck. (See photo in our online Trophy Gallery.)
There are a couple of other operations in this region, and I have hunted with them. Not to detract from them, but I think La Greca is tops. He lives in the region and previously worked with one of the other operators, so he has the experience and knowledge of the area. He also runs a smaller, more personalized hunting service. He takes no more than 20 hunters per season with only six hunters in camp at a time.....
