We have two positive reports in hand on Stone sheep hunts taken this season. As most hunters are well aware, Stone sheep are now the most coveted, expensive and difficult-to-take trophy in North America.
Subscriber Jose Marti hunted for Stone sheep in the Cassiar/Colt Lake area of British Columbia this September with Scoop Lake Outfitters (250-491-1885; www.scooplake.com), taking a 157 SCI trophy ram. (See photo in our online Trophy Gallery.) Marti tells us that sheep were “abundant” in the area and that the weather “mostly cooperated.” He was also looking for a grizzly, which he failed to take, saying they were “very scarce.” He rates the guiding and trophy care as excellent, the camp and food as fair.
This was Marti’s second hunt with Scoop Lake. His first (see report ID 7051) in 2008 produced a moose and a mountain goat, but he struck out on sheep due to bad luck and bad weather. Marti gives the total cost of his hunt including transport as $44,255. Three of these hunts were for Stone sheep and two were successful; the unsuccessful hunt was in 2000. James Helinger, Jr., made it clear that weather was to blame for his lack of success. He went back in 2006 and took a “massive 13-year-old trophy ram.”…
