It has been numerous years since I reported on outfitter Bubba Glosson, owner of Southwest Trophy Hunts (325-388-0385, or 512-413-1618; www.swhunts.com). One of the best western hunting operators there is, Glosson recently made some significant changes to his operation, and I think it’s worth telling you what you he’s up to.
For over 20 years, Glosson hunted a variety of big game, including whitetail, antelope, aoudad, desert mule deer, Carmen Mountain whitetail and 23 exotic species – and he operated in three states. He was best known for providing professionally-conducted hunts, while producing a high percentage of trophy-class animals. His operation’s name is well sprinkled throughout the record books. As you can imagine, covering so many hunts in that many locations resulted in Glosson getting spread pretty thin and having to use multiple guides.
These days he emphasizes hunts for aoudad, and occasionally Carmen Mountain whitetails, on carefully-selected ranches in the Big Bend country of West Texas. This report will concentrate on his aoudad hunts, because that is his passion and where Southwest Trophy Hunts (SWTH) is rewriting the record books.
Restricting the number of species he hunts now allows Glosson to attend every hunt he books. He uses only one other guide, Clancy Yarter, and often both of them are guiding on the same hunt, even when there is only one hunter. Having both of these guys glassing together improves your odds of getting a real trophy, as aoudad are extremely difficult to spot in the volcanic and sandstone bluffs of the desert country. I have hunted with a number of very qualified guides in my hunting career, but I have never hunted with anyone who was as good at spotting animals with high-powered binoculars as Glosson. And with Yarter helping, you can be sure that they don’t miss much.....
