It has been a year since outfitter Jay Carlson of Minodo Safaris took a break from hunting the Philippines after he was gored by an Asian water buffalo there, but this season he was back at it and reports taking several record book trophies with clients. That includes what Carlson says is sure to be the new Number One Philippine warty pig. This is a subspecies of the bearded pig. While this variety does not have the jowl hair bearded pigs are known for, it does carry a mane and long hair over its body. Interestingly, its tusks are more like teeth than the classic pig tusks. Carlson says only four of these trophies have been submitted to SCI, but if all of his clients from this year submit paperwork, the number should total eight. Six of those were taken with him. The trophy Carlson says will rank number one has a green-score of 15¼ and was killed by Michael Valencia. (See photo in our online Trophy Gallery.)
One of Carlson’s other clients also took what he says is the largest Asian water buffalo taken in that region in the last 30 years.....
